... I found a salvage yard across the road from the Saigon Centre in District 1 selling all sorts of “antiques” as well as doors and shutters saved from colonial-era buildings facing demolition. . I would LOVE a couple of these to take back to Australia but I’m not looking too closely as I have absolutely no idea how to get them home. . And there’s an old cyclo there too for anyone seeing a new mode of transport.

... Saigon #doorporn. . A modernist beauty on the Independence Palace gatehouse.

... Saigon’s Reunification Palace by night. . This place always makes me think of Neil Davis, the legendary Australian photojournalist who covered years of the “American War” and stuck around in Saigon after the very last American soldiers left at first light on the morning of May 1, 1975. . He wanted to be there to see what happen when the North Vietnamese Army arrived so waited on the Palace lawns for the first troops to reach District 1. . His photos of NVA tanks rolling through the palace gates, and a Communist soldier waving the new regime’s flag from the balcony, are some of the conflict’s most significant images. . Davis survived bombs and bullets in Vietnam only to be killed during a tin-pot coup in Bangkok 10 years later.

... can’t get enough of the view from my room at Liberty Central Saigon Citypoint Hotel.

... exploring the bones of the glorious - but now slightly disheveled - building at 42 Nguyen Hue Street. . This structure went up in the late 1960s to accommodate American soldiers serving in Saigon and then was home to dock workers from the nearby shipyard after the south fell in 1975. . The building is now home to indie cafes, coffee shops and artist studios making it easy for architecture fanatics like me to snoop around on the way to a cool drink.
