I’m on a Holland America cruise ship visiting ports around the north of Scotland and today, after a sunny springtime day in Glasgow, the ship heads west along the River Clyde in preparation for a return to the open water and a night’s cruising to its next destination.
The banks of the River Clyde are lined by villages nestled between the water’s edge and hills, sprawling farms with pretty cottages surrounded by green paddocks, rolling hills shaded yellow by vast swathes of wild gorse, and industrial enclaves where ships are serviced and repaired ready to return to the high sea.
