The Chase Range appears under the wing as my Air Adventure tour of the Flinders Ranges draws to a close with a quick two-hour flight back to Melbourne.
South Australia’s Flinders Ranges is one of Australia’s most beautiful patches of outback, easily accessible by asphalt from Adelaide, but doing a flying tour with Air Adventures takes the driving out of the destination.

And there’s the bonus of seeing this magnificent landscape from above.
After departing Blinman dirt strip our pilot Darcy steered the aircraft across the top of Wilpena Pound which is one of the amous landmarks in South Australia and a location that boasts a rich indigenous and pioneering history.
A few years ago I was able to walk into the centre of the geological feature and visit the old homestead there built by a family that lived in the region back during the early days of settlement.
The family ran cattle and sheep but didn’t need to put in any fences because the arrangement of rocks that make up Wilpena Pound formed a natural paddock that contained the stock.
