I’m enjoying a four-night cruise along China’s famous Yangtze River from Yichang to Chongqing with Wendy Wu Tours and today, the second full day of the voyage, sees my ship the Victoria Katarina navigating two of the waterway’s three iconic gorges.
First there’s Wu Gorge which is a stone’s throw from Badong – the metropolis at the mouth of Shennong Stream, the location of the morning excursion from the Victoria Katarina – and is sometimes called the Great Gorge.
This dramatic landmark is 45km long, stretching from Wushan to Guandukou, and was the location of many a dramatic battle during what the local Chinese call “ancient times”.
Next is the shorter Qutang Gorge which is only 8km long, with the Yangtze River snaking between the Chijia Mountain to the north and Baiyan Mountain on the south side of the waterway, and the riverboat completes the journey in just 30 minutes.
