There’s a choice of hotels near Hong Kong International Airport for travellers looking to pause between planes, but my favourite is the Novotel Citygate Hong Kong which is a five-minute ride on the complimentary shuttle from the arrivals area.
The first time I stayed at this hotel was weeks after it opened a few years back and I made another visit today during my journey home from Shanghai to Melbourne.
The hotel boasts 440 guest rooms and suites, all promising temporary residents a refreshing view from the big windows in each chamber, with the building sitting right on top of the Citygate Outlets shopping centre.
The lobby is often busy, feeling more like a city train station at peak hour than a serene place to stay, but this just goes to show how accessible the address is with travellers looking to rest between flights.
The location is a bonus and as well as being a stone’s throw from the airport, and an elevator ride to the shops and restaurants below, the Novotel Citygate Hong Kong is just 30 minutes by MRT train from Central Station in the heart of Hong Kong Island.
The rooms are simple but comfortable with efficient air-conditions that keep the space cool on the hottest Hong Kong days, a big bed, desk for working, and the floor-to-ceiling window that takes advantage of the waterside view.
While the bathroom is open to the sleeping area, providing a feeling of space and ample light for those standing at the mirror, the shower and toilet are in separate cubicles for privacy.
