WHAT …
On my April visit to Shanghai with Wendy Wu Tours I make an afternoon stop in Zhujiajiao before dashing to the airport for an evening flight on to mountaintop Zhangjiajie.
The traditional village’s waterways were constructed long ago so the village’s fishermen could take the catch to neighbouring settlements.
My guide explains there are so many manmade streams in this part of China we could board one of the traditional wooden boats in the centre of the settlement and travel back to The Bund in nearby Shanghai via quiet canals.
